Las historias del mundo interior de una casa en Santiago de Chile se interrumpen cuando  desconocidos tocan el timbre en la puerta de la casa y de este modo entran en la película.
/ The stories of the inner world of a house in Santiago, Chile are interrupted when some strangers ring the bell of such house, thus making their way into the movie.

SINOPSIS
La casa del director de la película, en Santiago de Chile,  tiene una puerta que da a la vereda. Esta puerta separa dos espacios: el espacio interior, que es la casa, y el espacio exterior, que es la ciudad. En el espacio interior hay un corredor con un ventanal que da a un pequeño patio. En el patio compiten la Flor de la Pluma (wisteria sinensis), la Buganvilla (buganvillea spectabilis), y la Parra que conviven con una diversidad de pájaros que bajan a tomar agua y bañarse en una pileta, y varios gatos de casas vecinas. Por el ventanal entra la luz del sol que va moviéndose durante las estaciones del año. En el interior de la casa hay múltiples objetos desde los cuales el realizador desprende historias que cuenta con su propia voz en off. Estas historias se interrumpen cuando conocidos y desconocidos tocan el timbre. El director les abre la puerta y se interesa por los desconocidos. Pide sus direcciones y va a sus casas a golpear sus puertas, creando una red de líneas entre su casa y la de los desconocidos. Esta red se dibuja en un gran plano de la ciudad que hay en el interior de la casa. Luego continúa el relato de historias que también puede interrumpirse  cuando un pájaro llama la atención o por su belleza, o por el sigilo de su movimiento o por el baño que se da en la pileta. La película oscila entre la observación del paso del tiempo y la vida en el interior de la casa y el patio, las historias contadas con la voz en off, las interrupciones de quienes tocan el timbre y las visitas a las casas de estos desconocidos en los lugares más diversos de la ciudad. Así se va construyendo una trenza de personajes, espacios, tiempos y relatos que revelan el universo complejo de situaciones que se dan en la relación de una casa con la ciudad, en el transcurso de un año.

SYNOPSIS
The movie director’s house in Santiago, Chile, has a door that leads to the sidewalk. This door separates two spaces: the inner space, the house itself, and the outer space, the city. There is a corridor in the inner space which has a large window that leads to a small patio. In this patio, the feather flower (wisternis sinensis), the Bungavilla (bungavillea spectabilis) and the grapevine struggle among them. They coexist with a variety of birds that come down to the patio and drink water from a fountain and bathe in it, plus some cats that belong to the adjacent houses. Sunlight comes through the window as it moves during the changing seasons. Inside the house, there are many objects from which the director takes stories that he tells with his own voice (voice-over). These stories are interrupted when acquaintances and strangers ring the bell. The director opens the door and becomes interested in the strangers.  He asks about their address and goes to their houses to knock on their doors, creating a net of links between his house and the strangers’ houses. This net is drawn in a large map of the city found inside the house. Then, the story continues though it can also be interrupted when a bird calls the attention or because of the bird’s beauty, or due to the stealth of its movement or when it bathes in the fountain.The movie moves between the observation of the passing of time and the life inside the house and the patio, the stories told in a voice-over mode, the interruptions from those who ring the bell and the visit  to those strangers’ houses in the most diverse places of the city. This way, a braid of characters, spaces, time and stories is built,  revealing the complex universe of situations present in the relationship between the house and the city during the course of a year.

Maria Graham is a historical drama adapted from the diary of the famous British travel-writer Maria Graham who arrived in Chile in 1822 just as the country was becoming independent from Spain. During her nine months in Chile – with the constant threat of renewed civil war, and surviving a major earthquake in Valparaíso –  she befriended both the Supreme Director Bernardo O’Higgins and the Scottish admiral Lord Cochrane, Admiral of the Chilean navy. Her story is one of political intrigue and rivalry, of a country struggling to its feet after the years of bloody fighting which marked an entire continent. She is a woman coming to terms with her husband’s recent death: In her discovery of this breathtakingly beautiful country, its people and its customs, she learns to live again.

Este era un hombre. Vivía con su madre. Cuidaba una casa patronal, en el campo de Chile. Un día el hombre encontró un hueso en el jardín. El hueso estaba agujereado. Era una flauta pensó, una flauta hueso. El hombre la tocó y la música se volvió canción. La voz de la canción suplicaba que buscaran los otros huesos de su cuerpo disperso. El hombre y su madre se fueron por esos caminos de Dios y de los mil demonios, buscando los huesos con que componer el esqueleto de aquel cristiano. Y darle santa sepultura. Y vieron lo que vieron, vivieron lo que vivieron. Muchas historias vivieron. Y aunque no se la contaron a nadie, otros la contaron por ellos.

Once upon a time there was a man. He lived with his mother, and worked as the caretaker of a large country house in Chile. One day the man found a bone in the garden. The bone had holes in it – it was a flute. The man took the flute and began to play it. The music turned into a song, and the voice singing the song begged the man to look for the other bones of a body scattered here and there. So the man and his mother set off following every path – that of God and those of the devil -, looking for the bones so that they could put the skeleton of the Christian man back together again and give him a Christian burial. And they saw what they saw, and lived what they lived. Many a story. And although they never told their tale to anyone, others told it for them.

What are the secrets we´re talking about? There´s a little bit of everythings: Murder. theft and betrayal, but also secrets that have  no importance at all. In the domino sequence of this film the serious lies get into bed with the funny and the non-sensical. The film gives us a radiographic slice of Chile today.
